Ilhan Omar got stopped at a Minnesota mall and swore prosecutors have her name all wrong.
Her office calls the story a disgusting smear and blames the reporters who keep asking.
And Omar’s own words from years ago point to one name she tried hard to make disappear.
Omar Answered the Name Question With Five Words at a Minnesota Mall
A Fox News Digital reporter caught up with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) at the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minnesota and asked the simplest question in politics. What’s your name?
Omar didn’t hesitate. “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, you know it,” she said. “It’s Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
But federal prosecutors in Washington, DC apparently see it differently. In an October court filing, US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro’s office referred to “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Pirro wants the search warrant for Omar’s Washington home kept under seal after several media outlets asked a judge to open it up, and her motion says agents haven’t finished executing it.
Two people familiar with the investigation, including a law enforcement source, told Fox News Digital the Elmi name reflects the evidence investigators have compiled so far. One of them dismissed Omar’s version in six words: “That’s not her real name.”
Omar’s spokesperson called the reports “completely false” and labeled the claim that she once married her brother a “disgusting conspiracy theory.” Her ex-husband is Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Critics have alleged for years that he is her brother, and Omar has always denied it.
Prosecutors have not charged Omar with any crime. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington home in October as part of a probe into whether she or her father committed immigration fraud on the way to citizenship, and federal authorities have since subpoenaed members of her family and seized her cellphone.
Most of the coverage has fixated on the last name. Elmi. The ex-husband’s name.
But the two words sitting in the middle deserve a much closer look.
A Father’s Day Post Vanished Before Sunrise in 2019
Go back to June 2013. Omar posted a Father’s Day message on Twitter that opened, “Happy Father’s Day to my aabo Nur Said.” Aabo is the Somali word for dad.
Nur Said. Throughout her political career, Omar has given her father’s name as Nur Omar Mohamed.
The post sat untouched for six years. Then, in September 2019, a cleric known online as the Imam of Peace, Mohamad Tawhidi, dug it up and pointed out the obvious overlap with her ex-husband’s name. In Somali naming tradition, a child’s middle name typically comes from the father, as several outlets noted at the time.
Omar deleted the tweet early the next morning, according to a ProPublica tracker of deleted tweets cited by the Washington Free Beacon.
And her office rolled out an explanation that left a lot of folks scratching their heads. A spokesperson said Nur Said means “Happy Light” and had served as her father’s nickname since childhood. The office also said Omar took the post down because her family faced death threats.
Death threats are serious, and nobody should wave them away. But the nickname story ran into trouble almost immediately.
Daily Caller investigative reporter Luke Rosiak pointed out that Omar’s sister Leila listed her father’s name as Nur Said Elmi on her marriage certificate in the United Kingdom. Rosiak also flagged an October 2016 profile by reporter Cory Zurowski that first gave the father’s name as Nur Said Elmi Mohamed, then quietly switched it to Nur Omar Mohamed a day later. Alpha News caught that edit first.
And in April 2020, journalist David Steinberg reported that Omar’s own 2018 campaign documentary, Time for Ilhan, put “Nur Said” on screen to identify her father and repeated the name in the credits.
Folks don’t usually put a childhood nickname on a marriage certificate. A campaign film crew usually asks the family how to spell Dad’s name before rolling the credits.
Prosecutors Just Wrote the ‘Nickname’ Into Her Legal Name
Now look again at the name in Pirro’s filing. Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.
The “Happy Light” nickname sits right in the middle, exactly where Somali tradition would place a father’s name. It lines up with her ex-husband’s name. It lines up with the father’s name on her sister’s marriage certificate, according to the reporting from 2019.
Maybe an innocent explanation ties all of it together. Families carry more than one name, and records from a country that collapsed into civil war in 1991 hardly set the gold standard for precision.
But federal prosecutors don’t drop an “a/k/a” into a court filing to describe a pet name. They use it when they believe the name on the ballot is the alias.
A former Minnesota federal immigration judge told Fox News Digital that if the government proves Omar wasn’t using her real name, every form she ever filled out could face investigation. Omar has held public office since January 2017. That adds up to a mountain of signatures.
Her father, who died in Minneapolis in June 2020 from complications of COVID-19, can’t settle the question for her now.
The Fact-Checkers Never Went Back
Back in 2019, the Free Beacon asked the fact-checkers who had brushed off the brother question whether the deleted tweet changed anything. They declined to revisit their conclusions.
And that pretty much sums up how the national press handled this story for the better part of a decade. Conservative reporters tracked down marriage certificates, archived deleted posts, and screen-grabbed documentary credits. The big newsrooms called it a smear and moved on to the next Trump story.
Now several media outlets want a federal judge to unseal the search warrant. Transparency apparently became urgent the moment a prosecutor started asking the same questions Rosiak asked seven years ago.
Omar’s family arrived in the United States as refugees in 1995. Immigration restrictionists have argued for years that when Washington processes refugees and green cards in huge numbers, the vetting turns into a rubber stamp, and nobody learns what slipped past the front desk until decades later. If the allegations against Omar hold up, her case would make that argument better than any think-tank white paper ever could.
None of that is proven. A judge hasn’t ruled on anything, and Omar remains innocent unless and until prosecutors prove otherwise.
But Omar keeps answering a paperwork question with a slogan. “You know it” plays great at a campaign rally. It won’t carry much weight in a federal courtroom.
So when a judge finally unseals that warrant, what name will investigators have written down for Ilhan Omar’s father?
