The 2020 election is about more than the Presidency.
Whoever wins could decide the ideological tilt of the Supreme Court for a generation.
And all hell broke loose when the next Supreme Court nominee leaked.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is the longest serving member of the nation’s high court.
Thomas won confirmation in 1991 after Joe Biden and other Democrats tried to use Anita Hill’s lies to derail his candidacy.
Liberals feared what a black conservative on the Supreme Court would mean and tried to sink him with what was up to that point the ugliest smear campaign in judicial nomination history.
Thomas has repeatedly shot down retirement rumors, but there will continue to be speculation that whoever wins the 2020 election will appoint Thomas’s successor.
If Trump wins, Thomas could retire while Republicans control the White House and Senate to allow President Trump to nominate a younger replacement.
That would avoid the peril Democrats now find themselves in as they are hoping and praying 86-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s health doesn’t force her to retire while Trump is President and Mitch McConnell is the Senate Majority Leader.
Should Democrats win the Presidency in 2020, they could hold the White House for eight years which would put a Democrat President in line to possibly nominate Thomas’s replacement.
In the 2016 election, Donald Trump used the vacancy created by Antonin Scalia’s tragic death as a rallying cry for conservatives to turn out at the polls.
Trump released a list of conservatives he pledged to pick from to replace Scalia if elected.
That move paid off in spades as voters that made the Supreme Court their number one issue broke 56 percent to 41 percent for Donald Trump.
Court nominations have always motivated Republican voters more than Democrats because Roe v Wade legalized abortion on demand in America.
As the losing side in that case, conservatives drew more motivation to change the courts from a liberal policy board to an originalist centered third branch of government as the framers intended.
Democrats are trying to train their voters to match the right’s enthusiasm for voting on filling judicial vacancies.
That’s why during a campaign stop in Iowa, Joe Biden declared that he would nominate Barack Obama to the Supreme Court if he wins the election.
“Biden asked here in Washington, Iowa, if he would ever nominate former President Obama to serve on the Supreme Court. ‘If he’d take it, yes,’ Biden says,” the Wall Street Journal’s Ken Thomas reported.
Donald Trump won Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in part because black voter turnout rates dipped from the historic highs of Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
Biden is trying to kill two birds with one stone by announcing his intention to nominate Obama to the Supreme Court.
First, Biden wants to try and copy Trump’s success from 2016 in motivating the base vote on Supreme Court nominations.
Second, Biden seeks to juice black voter turnout to the Obama levels by promising to give Obama a historic promotion.
