Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ dreams of a landslide next November just went up in smoke.
Democrats were completely caught off guard by how their fortunes changed.
And that’s because Donald Trump turned the 2020 election upside down with this jaw-dropping decision.
That’s because Democrats were about to resolve their own party infighting.
Ocasio-Cortez and her followers may be numerous on social media, but they’re badly outnumbered in Congress, where Pelosi has decades of experience and hundreds of supportive Democrats at her back.
Against these insurmountable odds, Ocasio-Cortez and her backers number may be in the double digits, and none of them have any experience in the sort of backroom politics that enabled people like Pelosi to rise to power.
As radical as they are, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib are all too inexperienced and too ignorant to know how to take down someone as powerful as Pelosi.
But Trump knows how.
And he wants the Ocasio-Cortez wing of the party to emerge victorious because he knows that the American people overwhelmingly reject her brand of politics.
If Trump can paint the entire Democratic Party with the same radical brush that Ocasio-Cortez painted herself, his re-election chances in 2020 will skyrocket.
Which is exactly the argument that one NBC analyst wrote when they argued that, “Trump wants the Democratic Party stuck to its progressive fringe. Thanks to him, now they are.”
“President Donald Trump clearly didn’t like the way House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s fight with ‘The Squad’ was playing out for him,” writes Jonathan Allen from NBC.
“After Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., accused Pelosi of being ‘disrespectful’ to young women lawmakers of color, Democrats on Capitol Hill rallied to Pelosi’s corner and distanced themselves from the four congresswomen who have become the latest avatars of liberal politics in Republican attacks.
That was the opposite of the political dynamic he needs as he faces re-election — he wants the Democratic Party stuck to its progressive fringe so that he can portray his opponents as too extreme to lead the country — and he moved quickly to flip the script.”
Not only did it force Democrats to defend Ocasio-Cortez, it allows him to portray the party as the champion of socialism and radical politics, the very things that swing voters in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, overwhelmingly reject.
“That, in short, is his calculation for 2020, whether or not his calculation turns out to be a smart one: that pairing The Squad and the rest of the Democrats helps pave the path to a second term,” concludes Allen.
