Democrats immediately started cooking up amnesty schemes and lawsuits against the President’s team.
Even a few friendly voices on the Right think some horse trading sounds reasonable.
And JD Vance just applauded the one man in the building who has killed that kind of deal before.
The Staffer Who Sank the Gang of Eight Just Moved Into the Corner Office
President Donald Trump tapped Stephen Miller as White House Chief of Staff after the midterm beating cost Susie Wiles her job. Wiles is moving over to MAGA Inc, the President’s political operation.
Vice President JD Vance cheered the news almost immediately. “Stephen Miller is an amazing patriot and will do great things,” Vance said. “Congrats to him on a well-deserved promotion!”
Immigration hawks lined up right behind him. Jeremy Carl, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, called it “great news for today, and even better news for 2028,” and predicted Miller would make sure “the popular policies that the President campaigned on in 2024 . . . are actually implemented.”
That 2028 line didn’t land by accident. Vance stands as the clear America First heir apparent. And the people around him know exactly who holds the keys to the President’s schedule now.
But the most interesting part of this story sits in a Senate press office back in 2013.
That year, the bipartisan Gang of Eight pushed an amnesty bill through the Senate, 68 to 32. Then-Senators Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, and Jeff Flake lent their Republican names to it, and the Washington consultant class treated the whole thing like a done deal.
Then a young communications director for then-US Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) went to work. Miller wrote Sessions’ speeches, assembled a thick book of talking points, and fed the research to anybody who’d listen. The House never took the bill up, and it died.
That staffer now controls who walks into the Oval Office and which papers land on the President’s desk.
Democrats Skipped the Argument and Went Straight to the Lawyers
Democrats greeted the promotion like a sore winner greets a recount. According to Breitbart, they’re already pledging lawfare against Miller.
US Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) said the move “doubles down on the politics of hatred, lawlessness, and failure that the American people soundly rejected.” US Representative James Walkinshaw (D-VA) branded Miller “the main architect of the chaos.”
Hatred is the word Democrats grab whenever the conversation turns to wages, rent, and who actually gets to stay in the country. It saves them from explaining why they want the border wide open in the first place.
And one Democrat drifted well past insults. Breitbart reported that Richard Ojeda said he’d gladly go to jail for the chance to beat up Miller. Don’t wait up for the “threats to democracy” crowd to issue a statement on that one.
Beyer deserves one more look. Breitbart points out he owns an auto sales business in Virginia. Nobody has accused his dealerships of anything. But keep that detail in mind, because the next idea on the table aims straight at the people who sign paychecks.
The Kind of Enforcement Nobody Can Film
Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, knows Miller’s work better than most. During the Gang of Eight fight, Miller leaned on his group’s research to make the case against the bill.
Krikorian told Breitbart the new job gives Miller room for a reset. “Enforcement is imperative both in a policy sense and a political sense,” Krikorian said. “Broadly speaking, the public wants immigration control, but they don’t like to see pictures of it.”
The numbers line up with him. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in February found 61 percent of Americans support deporting illegal aliens, even while plenty of respondents grumbled about tactics. A Harvard CAPS/Harris survey in June put support for deporting every illegal alien in the country at 56 percent. Voters handed Trump a mass deportation mandate in 2024, and they haven’t asked for it back.
Krikorian’s fix is what he calls briefcase enforcement. Run more payroll audits. Send more Social Security no-match letters. Cut illegal aliens off from American banks and tighten the “Know Your Customer” rule banks already follow.
“It’s way more likely to get people to leave than memes of people in shackles going on a plane,” he said. “Also, you can’t take a picture of it!”
Funny, but true. A raid on a meatpacking plant leads the evening news for a week. An audit letter lands quietly on a plant manager’s desk, and suddenly the cheap labor looks a whole lot more expensive.
Illegal aliens cross the border for paychecks, and somebody signs every one of those paychecks. Krikorian even claimed Vance, in his own postmortem on social media, signaled openness to pointing enforcement more at employers.
A Smaller Amnesty Is Still an Amnesty
Then the friendly fire started.
Krikorian floated a trade with Democrats. Illegal aliens on Temporary Protected Status would get amnesty, and in return Congress would scrap TPS going forward and stop any president from handing work permits to whatever illegal aliens he pleases. He didn’t play cute with the label, either. “You shouldn’t deny it, you shouldn’t play word games,” he said.
Give the man credit for honesty. But honesty doesn’t make the deal any better.
TPS started out as temporary shelter. Presidents of both parties kept rolling it over, year after year, until “temporary” turned into a polite word for permanent. Locking in that permanence rewards the very loophole Krikorian wants closed. And every amnesty arrives with a promise that it’ll be the last one. Ronald Reagan signed one in 1986 alongside a pledge of employer sanctions that Washington never seriously enforced, and the illegal population kept right on growing.
Democrats know exactly what amnesty buys them. Each one adds future voters to a party that needs them, and the Democratic Socialists of America, the openly Marxist outfit now driving the party’s energy, wants amnesty for everyone and an end to deportations altogether. That’s a plan to swap out the electorate, wrapped in a hug.
Trump already tested the Democrats’ good faith once. In January 2018, the White House offered a 10 to 12 year path to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal aliens whose parents brought them here as children, in exchange for a $25 billion border wall trust fund, an end to the visa lottery, and limits on chain migration. Then-US Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) called the wall money “ransom for Dreamers” and said the plan “doesn’t pass the laugh test.” Democrats walked away.
Krikorian expects a repeat. “The Democrats will never go for anything at all because they think they’re the Vanguard Party of history,” he said, adding that they’re betting on a win in 2028.
So why put an offer on the table at all? Krikorian thinks the optics would show Republicans heard the voters. Maybe. But an offer Democrats reject still sits in the record, and the next amnesty push will wave it around as proof Republicans already agreed to the principle.
The 2028 Amnesty Push Is Already Taking Shape
The establishment never treats a dead amnesty bill as dead. It treats it as postponed.
An analysis from Michigan State University’s political science department already mused that the Congress sworn in after the 2028 elections could try to revive a version of the Gang of Eight bill. That’s the long game for the donor class: wait out Trump, then try again with a friendlier face in charge.
Miller knows that playbook because he wrecked it once. And Democrats know it too, which explains why they want him buried in subpoenas and court filings before he even finishes unpacking.
In 2013, Miller helped kill an amnesty bill from a Senate staffer’s desk. Now he runs the office where the next amnesty offer would land, and the first one floating around Washington came from one of his oldest allies. Nobody has said yet where that one ends up.
