JD Vance Felt the Knives Come Out From One Fox News Host

The Bush-era establishment never forgave Donald Trump for taking its party, and now it smells a chance to grab it back.

Its newest messenger didn’t come from MSNBC or The View.

And Dana Perino just handed JD Vance one 2028 verdict he won’t like.

A Fox News Co-Host Started Writing the Movement’s Final Chapter

Dana Perino, co-host of Fox News’ top-rated show The Five, decided the smoke from the midterms had cleared enough to start planning the party’s life after Donald Trump.

The segment started with JD Vance. The Vice President had just published a lengthy post on X blaming the Iran war for the Republican wipeout, and co-host Greg Gutfeld turned to Perino for her read on where the GOP goes from here.

She skipped the sympathy and went straight to the eulogy.

“I would say no political movement lasts forever. And President Trump’s was longer because of the interruption in his two terms, right? Because of the Biden thing. So it’s a much longer time,” Perino said.

Gutfeld cracked, “Worst halftime show ever.”

But Perino kept rolling. “Well, and very consequentially so. I believe that the party, and I think the country, is looking forward to and needs to have a full-throated debate in the primary,” she said.

Then came the part aimed squarely at the Vice President.

“So let’s see it. I don’t know how many people will run on the Republican side. I don’t think that JD will have that lane to himself, obviously, if the last 24 hours are any indication. We haven’t mentioned Ted Cruz,” Perino said.

She even gave the Texas senator’s podcast a plug. “He was out there immediately as well, and he’s been doing a podcast the last two years. It’s like in the top 20, which is high in terms of how many are listening. So he was never going to have that lane to himself,” she added.

A movement with an expiration date. A primary brawl nobody in the base asked for. And a free commercial for Ted Cruz’s microphone. Not a bad haul for one segment.

Ted Cruz Already Road-Tested This Exact Pitch

Anybody following the 2028 maneuvering has heard this tune before.

Before the midterms, US Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) sat down with the Pod Force One podcast, pushed for a wide-open primary, and suggested the movement had no natural heir waiting in the wings. When pressed about his own plans, he played coy. “There will be plenty of time to have that conversation, but the time to have it is after the midterms, not before,” Cruz said.

He didn’t wait long. Right after the results came in, Cruz posted on X that “2026 was not simply a blue wave; it was a blue tsunami. It was an *** kicking.” He then repeated his postmortem on his weekly podcast, Verdict with Ted Cruz, the same show Perino name-checked on the air.

Perino’s “full-throated debate” lands in the same neighborhood as Cruz’s wide-open primary. Nobody needs to claim the two compared notes. The establishment doesn’t need a memo when everybody already sings from the same sheet music.

And Cruz’s record tells readers exactly which lane he wants. He ran as the Never Trump candidate in 2016. Axios obtained recordings in January 2026 that caught him mocking President Trump’s tariffs and taking shots at Vance. He objected to the $5,000 rebate checks, and he took swipes at the Vice President’s role in the negotiations that produced the short-lived memorandum of understanding with Iran. Al Jazeera described him as one of the war’s early cheerleaders.

But the friction with Vance didn’t start with the midterms. Back in October, Vance said, “It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president.” Cruz fired back that “people engage in political bomb-throwing when they’re feeling insecure.”

That’s the neoconservative lane, dressed up for a donor class that misses the pre-Trump Republican Party.

The Movement That Really Ran Out of Road Had Perino at the Podium

Perino knows a thing or two about political movements hitting a dead end. She took over as White House press secretary for President George W Bush in September 2007 and stayed at the podium until the Bush team cleared out in January 2009.

Look at what that White House peddled during her years in the press office.

In 2007, Bush threw his full weight behind an immigration overhaul crafted with Ted Kennedy and John McCain that would have handed amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Grassroots conservatives jammed the Senate switchboards for weeks. In June 2007, the bill’s backers came up short on a key procedural vote, and the whole scheme collapsed.

In the fall of 2008, the same White House rammed a $700 billion Wall Street bailout through Congress. Bush signed TARP into law that October, and working families got stuck with the tab for a mess the big banks made.

Voters had already handed down their verdict on the Iraq War in 2006, when Republicans lost both chambers of Congress. Two years later, Barack Obama won the White House with Democrats running Capitol Hill.

Now that’s a movement that didn’t last forever. It barely made it through two terms, and it left the party in rubble.

Now, a press secretary doesn’t write the bills. Perino defended them from the podium; she didn’t draft them. But she spent those years selling that brand to the country, and she still talks about the Republican Party like its old landlords are just waiting for the lease to run out.

Trump picked up the pieces in 2016 by running against nearly everything the Bush crowd stood for: amnesty for illegal aliens, so-called free trade deals that shipped factories overseas, and wars that never seemed to end.

A Crowded Primary Lets the War Crowd Change the Subject

Here’s what a “full-throated debate” actually buys the establishment. A crowded field means nobody has to answer for the war that sank the midterms.

Perino’s own network has the numbers on that. A Fox News poll during the campaign found more than nine in ten voters connecting sky-high gas prices to the Iran war. And in the Echelon Insights survey of Trump 2024 voters who turned sour on the President, wars and Iran came up 15 percent of the time while tariffs barely registered at 3.

Vance read those numbers and said so out loud. Axios reported that he spent months privately urging an end to the fight. The neoconservatives who pushed President Trump into the war would rather everybody talk about podcast rankings and primary math.

Maybe Perino honestly believes the party needs a fresh debate. Fair enough on paper. But funny how the debate always seems to circle back to the same Bush-era menu of open-ended wars, donor-friendly trade, and a softer touch on the border.

Meanwhile, the Democrats who just grabbed Congress aren’t debating anything. They’re lining up behind the most aggressive socialist wing the party has ever seated, and they’ve already got amnesty, court packing, and a fresh round of subpoenas on the to-do list.

And the establishment wants its fight with Vance for a simple reason. He opposes the foreign wars and the open-border policies that replace American workers with cheap foreign labor, the two things that crowd has never let go of.

Voters will sort out the 2028 field on their own. But expect a lot more segments like this one between now and then, all built around the same idea: the America First era had a nice run, and now the grownups from 2008 would like their party back.

Dana Perino took over the White House briefing room podium in September 2007. Sixteen months later, Barack Obama took the oath of office with Democrats in control of both chambers of Congress.
