Zohran Mamdani’s Anti-ICE Bragging Fell Flat Over One Number The Media Skipped

Socialist Zohran Mamdani turned a Democrat election night into a sales pitch for running federal agents out of every town in America.

The cable crowd that books him nodded along without checking his math.

And Mamdani left out one exit poll number that tells a very different story.

The Mayor Took His Sanctuary Road Show to Morning Cable

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sat down with MS NOW’s Morning Joe after Democrats seized both chambers of Congress, and he showed up ready to claim a national mandate for his crusade against immigration enforcement.

Co-host Willie Geist served up the premise himself. He told the mayor that three-quarters of voters called ICE’s conduct and what Geist labeled the administration’s “deportation regime” critical to their vote, then asked how City Hall manages the agency.

Mamdani didn’t bother with nuance. He said City Hall made clear to Washington that “we are never going to assist them in civil immigration enforcement.”

“We are not going to be a part of a deportation agenda in the way that they’ve built this administration,” he added.

Then came the line somebody on his staff clearly polished on the ride over. Mamdani claimed “the very politics we were told could only succeed in New York City is actually succeeding from Astoria to Albuquerque to Allentown, across this country.”

Three A’s in a row. Somebody at City Hall earned a raise for that one.

But catchy alliteration doesn’t change which voters walked into the booth fired up about the border, or which lever they pulled once they got there.

The Exit Poll Number Mamdani Hopes Nobody Reads

Geist’s figure traces back to the exit polls. NBC News found that about 73 percent of voters called immigration policy a crucial or major factor in their congressional vote.

Here’s what nobody on that set mentioned. Republicans carried that group 51 to 47, according to a review of the NBC data by The Federalist.

And among the 36 percent of voters who called immigration enforcement crucial, the people who cared about it most, Republicans won 57 to 42. A breakdown of CNN’s exit poll showed the same 15-point Republican edge, and it was the only major issue that helped the GOP.

Voters also told NBC they trusted Republicans over Democrats to handle immigration, 44 to 41. Among voters who named immigration as the single most important issue facing the country, a measly 9 percent backed Democrats.

Democrats will wave around the same polls showing 57 percent of voters felt enforcement went too far. Let them. A voter who grumbles about an issue and then casts his ballot over the gas bill isn’t handing anybody a mandate on it.

So what actually sank Republicans? Look at the war the neocons pushed the administration into. When NBC News asked voters whether the US got it right in taking military action against Iran, 63 percent said no, and Democrats pocketed 83 percent of that crowd.

Mamdani skipped that number, too. It doesn’t fit the story he wants to sell.

Allentown makes an especially strange trophy for him. Roughly 56 percent of the city’s residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, according to the Latin Times, and a Morning Call analysis of 2024 returns found that shifts in majority-Latino Allentown neighborhoods proved decisive in US Representative Ryan Mackenzie’s (R-PA) first win. Those neighborhoods moved right two years ago with the border front and center. Mamdani apparently assumes they now belong to him.

City Hall Wants a Say Over Your Parking Lot

Buried in the mayor’s answer sat the detail that should worry every property owner in the country.

“And we’re also letting businesses know, who own parking lots, that we want them to stop letting those parking lots be the site of where ICE is staging their locations and staging their enforcement,” Mamdani said.

City-owned lots came first. Mamdani signed Executive Order 13 in February, barring outside law enforcement from using city lots as staging areas without a judicial warrant or a formal agreement. In early November he fired off a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, ICE Acting Director David Venturella, and New York Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo, threatening to sue over agents parking at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and along Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.

“ICE has no right to use our property as a base for tearing families apart,” the mayor said. “Today, I’m telling DHS to order its agents off our lots.”

DHS didn’t flinch. A spokesman fired back that “ICE’s presence in public parking lots is fully authorized by federal law and is standard practice among law enforcement agencies across the country.”

But the private lots are where this gets uncomfortable. In October, Mamdani and more than 100 New York Democrats sent a letter to garage and lot owners across the five boroughs asking them not to “rent, lend or otherwise make your property available to ICE as a staging area for its enforcement operations.”

He didn’t stop at polite. “Do not rent your property to ICE. Do not lend it to them. Tell them they are not welcome,” Mamdani said in a statement. His office singled out two bank parking lots on Northern Boulevard in Queens and a garage on Morton Street in Manhattan.

Picture the guy who runs that garage. He makes his living renting spaces by the hour. Now the mayor, backed by a hundred politicians, has named his street in a press release and told him who his customers can’t be.

Nothing in the letter mentions permits, inspections, or licenses. Nothing has to. Every small business owner in that city knows exactly which building those come from.

The mayor belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America, a group whose platform openly calls for public ownership of major industries. A parking lot letter is small potatoes next to seizing corporations. But the instinct runs in the same direction: the owner holds the deed, and the movement decides what he does with it.

The Shooting Story Comes With Missing Pieces

Mamdani justified the whole campaign by pointing to “a federal agency that is willing to open fire on a moving car in broad daylight right after school’s let out.”

He meant an October shooting in Marble Hill. An ICE officer shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck as agents tried to arrest him, with his 5-year-old son in the back seat. The boy wasn’t hurt, and Belgal survived.

DHS tells a fuller story than the mayor does. The agency described Belgal as a criminal illegal alien with a grand larceny conviction, prior arrests, and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang, and it said he rammed ICE vehicles as officers tried to box in his car. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Belgal pulled the car forward before an officer fired. Belgal has pleaded not guilty in a pending drug case, and the FBI joined the investigation.

DHS also said its officers didn’t know the child was in the car. Belgal did.

Then DHS dropped the detail Mamdani never mentions. “This criminal illegal alien was arrested by the NYPD on December 7, 2023, but was released into the community a few days later by reckless Democrat sanctuary policies that put American lives at risk,” the agency said.

That’s the cycle. Sanctuary rules force agents to make arrests “at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments,” as DHS put it. Then the same politicians who wrote those rules strip away the parking lots where agents plan those arrests, and act shocked when the street turns chaotic.

Democrats Want to Take the Mamdani Model National

President Trump won the White House in 2024 promising mass deportations, and voters handed him that mandate. Mamdani thinks one midterm wiped it off the books.

And he isn’t alone. Senator-elect James Talarico (D-TX) went on ABC’s The View right after his win and said “we have to take on this secret police force that is hurting our neighbors, including our immigrant neighbors.” He meant ICE.

That’s the incoming Democrat Senate talking, not some protester with a bullhorn.

Next comes the money fight over ICE’s budget, and after that, the amnesty push Democrats always dress up as reform. Every illegal alien who stays becomes a future voter, and Democrats understand that math far better than they understand a parking garage’s balance sheet.

Maybe Mamdani honestly believes his letter amounts to a friendly suggestion. Maybe. Garage owners in Queens have dealt with City Hall long enough to know better.

Mamdani wrapped his Morning Joe hit by insisting working-class Americans are tired of “a corruption of their prices.” Rich words from a socialist who wants to tell a businessman whom he may rent to.

So when City Hall’s next letter lands on a garage owner’s desk, how many of them will still feel free to hand a parking space to the federal agents enforcing the law voters demanded in 2024?
