Fetterman became the first Democrat senator to call for Bob Menendez to resign following prosecutors indicting Menendez on corruption charges.
The indictment accused Menendez of accepting bribes in exchange for favors such as passing sensitive U.S. government information to Egyptian officials and inserting himself into a criminal investigation.
One of the eye-popping allegations contained in the indictment seemed like something straight out of “The Sopranos” as prosecutors allege one of the businessmen handed Menendez’s wife, Nadine, $15,000 in cash to use as the down payment for a Mercedes-Benz convertible.
Federal agents also found $480,000 in cash in Menendez’s residence with some of the money stuffed into envelopes.
In response to the indictment Fetterman called on Menendez to resign saying the senator is “entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations.”
Fetterman did more than call for Menendez to step down as his office announced it would return the $5,000 Menendez donated to his 2022 campaign.
A parade of Democrats – including the man up for re-election in 2024 – quickly joined Fetterman in demanding Menendez step down.
But a defiant Menendez refused to step down and claimed the trial would vindicate him.
“To those who have rushed to judgment, you have done so based on a limited set of facts, framed by the prosecution to be as salacious as possible,” Menendez declared. “I recognize that this will be the biggest fight yet.”
Menendez even went so far as to claim those who want to force him out are racists who are furious that a Latino holds political power in America.
Fetterman responded by doubling down on his call for Menendez to resign.
“This week, I hope to see my colleagues fully address the alleged systemic corruption of Senator Menendez with the same vigor and velocity they brought to concerns about our dress code,” Fetterman wrote on social media.
Republicans only need to flip two seats to win control of the U.S. Senate.
Democrats already faced uphill battles in crimson-red states like Ohio, West Virginia, and Montana.
